Internships

Title: Classroom Teacher Intern
Start Date: August/September 2015
Length: 1 year (with the potential of staying two years)

Mission Statement
Word Made Flesh Thailand’s mission is to respond to the poor, marginalized and displaced people of Thailand through holistic, educational, therapeutic and creative projects to address their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Internship Summary
In April 2013, we launched our homeschool pilot project by paying a stipend for three students to leave the work in the street and enter our school as full time students. Since then we have added one additional student, bringing enrollment to six students including our own two daughters. Our classroom is a creative version of a one-room schoolhouse since our students range in age from 5 to 14 years. Incorporating principles from Montessori as well as the traditional classroom, we focus on one-on-one attention and give students the freedom to choose what they learn and how. Our goal is to recognize the unique value of each of our students and help them blossom into who they were created to be.

We have experienced huge success in our teaching methods as we have seen our students reading and writing in Thai within months and discovering their individual interests and passions. In order for us to continue in this and add students, we need more teachers. We are looking for a college graduate with an education degree looking to develop their teaching skills in a unique, innovative pilot program. The teaching intern will assist current teachers in creating teaching materials, teaching English, and building relationships with our students.

About Urban Migration
Migration is an age-old activity of human kind, nomadic tribes traveled and spread out over the entire world. Migration is traditionally spurred on by survival, food source, war and exploitation. Today’s migrant is still seeking survival. Modern migration is spurred on by poverty, civil war, and trafficking. This will take place via experiential engagement with urban migrant communities, living in a migrant community, and immersion trips to sources and locations of migration. The experiential immersion will be complimented with study of the intern’s own family history of migration, historic major migrations, comparison study of modern and historic migration, major causes of migration today, and advocacy campaigns on the dangers of migration in source country.
