Quack

I am still amazed by the things I miss happening around us. My wife and daughter will tell you, I am often clueless. I confess that, before two days ago, I didn’t know what Duck Dynasty was or knew any of the people involved on the show. I was, however, against my will, forced to pay attention to the people and the show because so many people were speaking out. I resisted the prompts yesterday to say something or do an interview about it because I didn’t know much about the show or people. I still don’t.

When I read an article about it by my friend, Jonathan Merritt, I was stunned at Mr. Duck Dynasty’s comments about blacks during Jim Crow. I certainly understand why many are upset about his comments geared towards the gay community, but I am left speechless at the lack of outrage over his racism and ridiculous comments about the Jim Crow era.

I guess I am more concerned that this guy is being set up by the media as someone we should listen to at all. He is a person that has brought more attention to hate and injustice as opposed to peace and joy. During the time of year where we are bringing attention to what it means to give and love based on the story of our Savior we are divided once again. I might add divided over the comments of someone who should not be teaching anyone, who has proved he is not wise or an example. How is it he has been put in this place? Are we a society that puts people in the position of “example” solely based on popularity and money? In my opinion that doesn’t qualify anyone to be taken seriously. We should be asking ourselves questions about why we watch and listen to people like this at all who are nothing more than quacks we have given a platform. I am saddened to see the division that is happening over this. Let’s remember the story of this season and get to being generous and kind to each other. Lets try and see if we can be known for our unity instead of our separation.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6, 7 NIV)
