David Bayne, April 2009

“Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.”  Ezekiel 47:12

Dear Family & Friends,                             April 2009

Recently our community was reflecting on the Kingdom of God and how we as God’s people are called to radiate the glory of the Triune God. We considered several key passages in Scripture that speak of the Kingdom and our participation in it. But, it is the imagery of Ezekiel 47 that continues to stick with me these first months of 2009. This vision speaks of living water flowing from the temple. This water soon becomes a deep and moving river, bringing life and healing wherever it flows. Salty water becomes fresh. Swarms of living creatures live near its banks. People fish along the shore. Trees along the river flourish, bearing all kinds of fruit and providing healing. This river flowing from God’s presence is a picture of the full and abundant life Jesus offers with His Kingdom (John 10:10).

Jesus proclaimed, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37-38). As I abide under the nourishment of living water and the Holy Spirit who dwells within me, I am also a bearer of this life giving water. This imagery of living water and invitation from Jesus challenges me, as I seek to radiate God’s glory and Kingdom here in Buenos Aires in all circumstances.

March 14 marked my first anniversary in Buenos Aires! While I celebrate and rejoice in the many ways God has drawn me into deeper relationship with Him, community, and ministry, I often find myself becoming impatient with myself. Moving to a new country as a foreigner, acquiring a new language, embracing a new culture, and seeking to identify with the struggles and needs of people often brings to the surface my limits, insecurities, and inadequacies. I am learning see my limitations and weaknesses through new lenses. Through the lenses of Paul who boasted in his difficulties and struggles, understanding that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness (1 Corinthians 12:9). As I begin my second year in Buenos Aires, I pray that I can posture my heart and life in a way that allows God’s glory to radiate through my life and weakness, pointing people to new life and hope in Jesus and His Kingdom!

Thank you for journeying with me this first year in Argentina! Your partnership in support, prayer, and encouragement means so much to me. I wouldn’t be here without you! This 2009 we have hopes and dreams for our ministry among the youth here. We continue to partner with the local church here. Please pray for deepening relationships with our friends at the train station and opportunities to accompany them in ways that point them to Jesus and bring transformation through Him.

Peace, David

P.S. – You undoubtedly notice a new look for WMF this month! We are excited about this new image and how it represents our community around the globe. Watch for more details and reflections coming soon!
